Gardening Bee - Call for volunteers!

We've got a new GARDEN CO-ORDINATOR! Co-op volunteer Paddy Lane, who's also been one of the prime movers in getting the new Thirroul Community Garden up and running, has offered to be the Garden Co-ordinator for Flame Tree. Many of you will have seen the unruly entry to our store morph into a little garden, created by a group of volunteers back in the summer. Now that we've renewed our lease and know that we'll be staying onsite for a while longer, it's time to tidy up the garden, to feed, weed, and get it shaped up for the growing season.

We need volunteers for a working bee SUNDAY 14 August 10am - 12pm at the Co-Op.
We also need some donations - of compost and of seeds and of plants.

Please contact flametreecoop@gmail.com if you can help out with any of these things - time, seeds, compost, or ideas!.

Here's Paddy's note, which includes a great tip on how to tell when it's tomato sowing season (be prepared to drop your trousers!):

Hi Everyone

As the new garden co ordinator I would like to invite everyone to a working bee on Sunday 14 th August 10-12pm.
Basically the bed needs some nourishment in order for all our new plants to grow when we put them in in spring. I believe that as much as possible it would be good to source our compost locally so I was wondering if everyone attending could bring at least a bucket of compost each from your own compost heaps. This saves the coop money in terms of buying manure/compost also more importantly we know where it is sourced from.

I am preparing a number of trays to start propagating for spring  plantings so if there are any spare seeds that need to be used before expiry dates creep up on us then all donations will be most welcome.

Apparently tomatoes should not be planted until one can quite comfortably sit on the ground with a bare bottom ( according to Jackie French) so if anyone wants to volunteer later in Spring just let me know!

Look forward to seeing you all and your buckets of compost and your ideas for the next planting season which is creeping closer and means warm sunny weather.

cheers
Paddy
