June newsletter: Sigh with relief: No, or very little, reference to EFY in here.

Hello All
End of June, and so a perfect storm of end-of-semester assessments, end-of-financial year stress, mid-winter vacations (India, Guatemala... we may eat and shop locally but our vollies get around!), and many of us may have been buried in the humdrum (or excitement, depending on your viewpoint) of financial end-of-year tasks. So apologies for the late bulletin.
On the topic of year-end 2010/11 (this is the promised "very little" reference): This week starting Wednesday evening 6:15 pm we'll be conducting a stock-take down at the shop. Rob will be co-ordinating, and some other wonderful vollies have raised their hands (thanks Sal, and Chris!) to help out in the counting and weighing and recording tasks, but if you think you'd like to help out too, please let us know. An extra pair of hands or two is always helpful. Please email
this address if you can help out on Wednesday.

Anyone who's visited or worked down at the co-op recently will have noticed how wonderfully clean and spruce it's looking. It's so organized out back there now!! That's all thanks to our tireless shop co-ordinator Mariel and her cleaning bee team, who worked on the Sunday of the June long weekend to make life so much easier for all of us. THANK YOU MARIEL and the CLEAN-BEES!. Here's a little note from Mariel:

A very big thank you to Denise, Matt and Kirk for smiling through a morning of non-stop lifting, wiping, washing, brushing and scrubbing; it was a trojan effort! A big thank you also to Mick for installing a wonderful pallet and creating lovely new labels for the storage area, and to Julie our ever wonderful web master for coordinating the call-out and responses.
Team work for the community rocks!

Ideally, we'd like to have a regular cleaning and maintenance bee, so if you think this is a way you'd like to contribute some volunteer time, please let us know. As well as earning yourself some volunteer credits, EVERYONE who uses and or works at the store will sing your praises!

Yet another of Mariel's initiatives has been to tidy the recycling area outside the shop. You may have noticed! In the spirit of reuse and recycle, we try to use everything we can, but in some cases, food safely laws mean we can't reuse all of the containers. So please help yourselves to the containers outside the store near the recycle bin, and think of a use for them. (If in doubt, please check with the shop vollies, but basically any empty container outside the store against the large brick wall is for recycling). My young friend Noah (aged 8) creatively deployed some of our old olive cans and other metal containers in a recent creative project sponsored by Wollongong City Council, and he won a fabulous prize for his school! Check out Noah's winning Flying Pig here:

So what else is new in the store?

Well - not new, but ever popular: TSHIRTS! It's time to restock our popular flame tree T-shirts. We've had lots of inquiries about different color/style combos, so here's your opportunity to ask for your preferred Tshirt. Check out the T-Shirt order form. You can email in your preferences to this email address, and then head down to the co-op to pay, or you can take the form in to the co-op and order your favorite style.

For all the news of current products, and for reviews of store happenings, be sure to check out our re-vamped
facebook page (thanks Erin). Erin's always on the hunt for interesting information on all things organic, and she recently came across this article on natural deodorants.(And yes, Flametree stocks the Miessence range mentioned in this article.)

Recently Flame Tree Co-op was profiled as part of a project for an assignment by a UoW student, Jessica. Check out her coverage of our favorite co-op here, where she interviews vollies Kaz and Mike:

And to round up, be sure to keep checking our EVENTS page for happenings around the co-op and the community in general.

It's a busy time around here in winter!
Last week we had the marvelous "I am the Walrus" concert (thanks Alison, Judy, Eklektika and Funkier than Alice!).
This week be sure to head along to Wollongong Council's Op-Shop Tour on Tuesday.
On Friday night, you may have been planning to attend the Stop CSG fundraiser. If so, take note, the venue has changed to the Heritage Hotel at Bulli.
And to round off a sustainable week (and herald a new fiscal year) you might like to be inspired by my young buddy Noah, and get creative. How about sewing your very own personalized bag for shopping at the co-op? To find out more about the July 1 workshop, check our events page: http://flametree-events.blogspot.com/2011/06/sew-in-for-no-plastic-bags.html

See you down at the co-op soon! With your hand-sewn bag!

Happy right-side-of-the-winter-
solstice to YOU.
